A Big Donation for Little Tilda
When fellow human beings need help, you should offer it – especially when they are children. This is what went through the minds of OVB Regional Director Klaus Menger and his team in Wernigerode. When they heard of little Tilda and her family’s dire straits, they got straight to work.
Tilda was just 4 years old when she received her devastating diagnosis. Doctors had found a 6cm tumor in the middle of her brain. This is when her difficult journey began: During the first attempt to remove the tumor, her brain was damaged so severely that she stayed in a coma for several weeks. Tilda then suffered a stroke after a second operation. Rehabilitation in Brandenburg was supposed to help the little girl, but faltered after a few months due to new legal regulations. Tilda was released and is now receiving round-the-clock care from her parents.
Meanwhile she is unable to walk and the damage to her brain has changed her personality. Once so happy, she has lost her laugh. The mental strain on her parents is almost unimaginable. Then there are the financial worries: her parents are no longer able to work since they have to take care of Tilda as well as her two year old brother. State support is slow in arriving even though all the paper work has been filed.
A customer told OVB Regional Director Klaus Menger’s team about the family’s fate, who decided to try and at least help improve the financial situation. He wanted to surprise Tilda and her parents with a donation drive. Financial broker Kerstin Dickehut worked particularly hard to make sure the family could get help. She was the one who brought a charitable partner, a kindergarten of the PARITÄTISCHEN Netzwerke, on board in order to overcome the bureaucracy and make it possible for donations to reach their goal in the first place. The drive yielded a total of 2,675 Euros plus a personal gift for little Tilda. The financial brokers collected 175 Euros, Mr. Menger added another 1,000 Euros to the pile, and the OVB charity increased the amount by another 1,500 Euros.
This financial injection will do a lot to help Tilda's family get through the worst. However, the emotional support generated by the many participants of the donation drive was even more important.
